12-year-old boy dies at school in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar, probe launched
A 12-year-old boy died at a Vasant Vihar school on Tuesday morning, the Delhi Police said, adding that an investigation has been launched. A statement from the school indicated the student collapsed after a “scuffle”.
Police said the Class 6 student was rushed to Fortis Hospital where he was declared dead around 10.15 am. According to investigators, doctors believe the child may have suffered a seizure.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary said the boy had no visible injuries on his body.
“Some foam-like substance was oozing out of his mouth… Inquest proceedings have been initiated. The school’s boys and teachers are being examined and necessary legal action will be taken,” he added.
A statement from the school principal said they were “deeply saddened” over the “tragic incident that occurred on (the school) premises during a class transition” while extending “its heartfelt condolences and support to the bereaved family”.
It added, “A scuffle between two Class 6 students of similar age has resulted in the unfortunate collapse of one student. The school administration has taken prompt action, informed the authorities and is extending full cooperation to all concerned.”
Police said the post-mortem was conducted at Safdarjung Hospital later in the day but the report is pending; this will determine whether the child had any internal injury. Officers are also examining CCTV footage from the school to rule out the possibility of foul play.
