23-year-old IIT student dies by suicide at home in east Delhi, third case in 2023
A 23-year-old Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi student, identified as Panav Jain, took his own life at his home in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area, marking the third such case of a student from IIT Delhi dying by suicide in 2023. Panav, who was in his fourth year of a BTech program in Textile Engineering, was found hanging in his home by his parents, who had gone for a walk. No suicide note was discovered, and despite being rushed to Pushpanjali Hospital, he was declared dead by the doctors.
Panav’s father informed the police that his son had been struggling with stress and depression for several months and was undergoing treatment for his mental health issues. The police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
In previous suicide cases at IIT Delhi, a 21-year-old student named Anil Kumar took his life in September, reportedly due to pressure related to his studies. Another 20-year-old student, Ayush Ashna, also died by suicide in July. These incidents highlight the concerning trend of suicides among students at prestigious institutions.
It’s worth noting that earlier in the year, Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar reported that a significant number of students from various IITs, NITs, and IIMs have died by suicide since 2018.
