3 held for stealing copper cables from Delhi Metro Pink Line
The police on Friday arrested three men involved in multiple copper cable thefts along Delhi Metro tracks, disrupting services.
The arrested identified as Govind Kumar, 24, Sushil Kumar, 29, and Aas Mohammad, 29, were responsible for four thefts, one of which was reported between Majlis Park and Azadpur stations on the Pink Line on February 3, the police said. Two similar incidents were reported later, signalling a pattern of thefts, they said.
A specialised team analysed CCTV footage, identified the suspects’ modus operandi, and initially arrested Govind Kumar and Sushil Kumar.
The police recovered 85 meters of stolen cable and seized their getaway vehicle, a Bolero pickup truck.
“The thieves exploited heaps of debris to access the Metro tracks, cutting through barbed wire to steal valuable copper cables. Further investigation revealed that the accused used a four-wheeler to transport the stolen cables,” Hareshwar V Swami, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Metro.
Further interrogation led to the arrest of Aas Mohammad from his residence in Okhla, and recovered another 10 meters of cable.
During questioning, the accused allegedly admitted to committing multiple thefts, including one near Dwarka Metro Station. Investigation is underway to apprehend more accomplices, said the police.
