India tour of England: Mark Wood has joined the long list of injured England fast bowlers as the hosts look to make a comeback against India in the 3rd Test, starting August 25 at Headingley in Leeds.
The England and Wales Cricket Board on Monday announced that fast bowler Mark Wood will not be part of the 3rd Test between India and England. Wood has been ruled out of the Headingley Test, starting August 25, due to a “jarred right shoulder”.
England have not named a replacement for the 3rd Test while they said Mark Wood will be assessed after the completion of the 3rd Test. The 31-year-old will remain with the England squad during the course of the 3rd Test in Leeds.
“Wood sustained the injury on the fourth day of the second Test at Lord’s and will not be fit to play at Emerald Headingley starting on Wednesday. He will remain with the squad in Leeds and will continue his rehab with the England medical team. The 31-year-old will be assessed at the end of this Test match,” the ECB said in a statement.
The express paceman injured his shoulder while diving to save a boundary on Day 4 of the 2nd Test. Wood landed heavily on his right shoulder while diving headlong into an advertising hoarding. Despite showing discomfort, Wood bowled on Day 5, hitting speeds in excess of 90kmph.
Mark Wood bowled 24 overs in the first innings of the Lord’s Test and picked up 2 wickets. Wood braved the shoulder niggle in the 2nd innings and gave England a fine start by removing India openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul before sending Cheteshwar Pujara back to the pavilion. He aggravated his injury by tumbling on his follow-through on the final day.
India will be looking to take an unassailable 2-0 lead when the two sides meet at Headingley. Virat Kohli’s men scripted a remarkable comeback at Lord’s to win the 2nd Test by 151 runs.
