Uttarakhand rains live updates: Death toll rises to 17, around 100 stranded at Ramnagar resort

At least seven people were killed in separate rain-related incidents in Nainital district. Around 100 people were stranded at Lemon Tree Resort located at Ramnagar-Ranikhet route as water from Kosi River entered the resort after the river overflowed.

A cloudburst incident has been reported at a village in Ramgarh of Nainital district in Uttarakhand. According to initial reports, several people are feared trapped under the debris. Teams of local police and the district administration have rushed to the spot.

According to news agency ANI, some injured have been rescued from the spot where cloudburst occurred in Ramgarh. But actual number is yet to be ascertained.

Earlier on Monday, three labourers from Nepal died and two were injured with incessant rains lashing Uttarakhand as the authorities advised Chardham pilgrims not to proceed to the Himalayan temples till the weather improves. The labourers were staying in a tent at Samkhal near Lansdowne in Pauri district when rubble flowing down from a field above due to the rains buried them alive.

The Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains, lightning, hail storms and high speed winds (60-70 kmph) for all 13 districts of Uttarakhand till tomorrow. 

Meanwhile,Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami on Tuesday morning to take stock of the situation arising due to heavy rains. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Dhami yesterday on the phone to get an update on precautionary steps being taken by the state government in view of the heavy rain alert and assured him of all possible help.

The administration has asked Chardham pilgrims who arrived in Haridwar and Rishikesh by Sunday not to proceed further till the weather improves, while operation of vehicles for the Himalayan temples has been suspended temporarily. The Chardham Devasthanam Board said the yatra has been temporarily halted for the sake of safety of pilgrims in view of the heavy rain.

The peaks beyond Badrinath and Kedarnath received light snowfall, whereas the lower areas in Chamoli district were lashed by continuous showers. Rain continued in Uttarkashi and Dehradun as well.
