Colombia’s U-Turn After Tariffs and Sanctions From US, To Send Plane For Return of Its Nationals
The mass deportation of illegal immigrants, as promised by US President Donald Trump during the election campaign, has introduced a fresh tariff war between the US and Colombia after the latter denied US military planes carrying immigrants to land on its soil. Donald Trump has been ensuring the success of his “mass deportation” agenda to send off illegal immigrants.
For this purpose, military planes are being used giving no time to people to prepare as the Trump administration plans to remove as many illegal immigrants as possible.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro denied the landing of two such US military planes carrying immigrants, leading toTrump’s 25% tariff announcement and closure of the visa processas well. Colombia retorted with tariffs and sanctions on US goods as well.
However, hours later, the Colombian President’s office said that the government would make the presidential airplane available to “facilitate the humane return of Colombian nationals”. The country is engaging with the US to ensure “a minimum level of respect and humane treatment of the nationals during the deportation process”, the report added.
Petro had expressed anger over the way the immigrants were carried saying they were not “criminals” and should be treated with dignity.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement said that Petro had authorised the flights and “provided all needed authorizations and then canceled his authorization when the planes were in the air”. The Colombian President has rejected the claim.
Amid all this, the United States has suspended the issuance of visas at its embassy in Colombia, as per Trump’s order after Bogota refused military deportation flights, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.
“Measures will continue until Colombia meets its obligations to accept the return of its own citizens,” Rubio added in a statement, as per Barrons.
Last week, Mexico also denied US military flights to land on its soil. On Sunday only, the Brazilian authorities said they would seek “explanation” from the US for deporting immigrants in a disrespectful manner. According to reports, the Brazilian immigrants were handcuffed and sent on US planes without air condition and water.
