Cyclone Fengal: Depression weakens, moves west-northwest; heavy rainfall continues in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry
Holiday declared in several Tamil Nadu districts; yellow alert in Telangana, Karnataka
The IMD on Monday (December 2, 2024) said that the depression (remnant of cyclonic storm “FENGAL”) over north coastal Tamil Nadu & Puducherry moved nearly westwards and weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area at 5:30 a.m. over North Interior Tamil Nadu.
The remnant low pressure area is likely to emerge over southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around December 3.
Several districts in Tamil Nadu declared a holiday for educational institutions as cyclone Fengal continued to cause heavy rainfall. Cuddalore, Villupuram and Krishnagiri districts declared a holiday for all schools and colleges while Salem, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupatur, Vellore and Ranipet districts declared a holiday for only schools on December 2.
After making landfall near Puducherry on November 30, Cyclone Fengal weakened on Sunday, but torrential downpour under its influence paralysed the union territory, with the Army stepping in to evacuate stranded persons in inundated streets. Old-timers recalled such a fury of nature was not witnessed in the Union Territory for the last three decades.
Moreover, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in Telangana’s Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Jangaon districts for December 2.
