Jammu And Kashmir: Rape accused dies in police custody in Poonch, investigation ordered
The family members of the deceased questioned the death, urging senior police officials to conduct a thorough probe to ascertain the actual reason behind the demise. The deceased was arrested following a complaint of rape.
A rape accused died in police custody in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, said officials on Monday. A magisterial probe has been ordered into the matter, he added.
The deceased was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a woman in Poonch.
District Magistrate, Poonch Yasin M Choudhary said a report was received from Surankote sub-divisional magistrate that Ulfat Hussain of Marhote village attempted suicide by hanging inside the lockup of Surankote police station on Monday.
Hussain was implicated in a case of alleged abduction and rape of a woman, he said.
The accused was apprehended by the police based on a complaint filed by the victim on October 9, Choudhary said.
The family members of the deceased alleged custodial death, requesting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
SDM Mohd Jhangir Khan has been appointed as the inquiry officer to conduct a comprehensive magisterial enquiry into the matter, the official said.
