Mumbai BEST bus robbery: Seven including five dacoits held by Andheri Police, gold ornaments seized
Andheri police in Mumbai managed to arrest seven accused from Madhya Pradesh border after getting crucial leads from CCTV footage from the area where the robbery took place on July 19
Mumbai: Seven people including five dacoits have been arrested for allegedly robbing a man of gold ornaments worth Rs 46.50 in a moving BEST bus in Andheri (East).
With the arrest, police have also recovered gold valuables worth Rs 24.28 lakh. Police said further investigation is underway to recover the rest of the valuables.
The incident took place on July 19 when one Madhukar Kavinkar (44), who works with Patel Industries in Dahisar (East), was looted in a moving BEST bus. He was carrying gold ornaments to Zaveri Bazaar, according to a report in Indian Express.
“On July 19, Kavinkar boarded a BEST bus from Dahisar to go to Zaveri Bazaar. The accused had already done a recce of the factory where Kavinkar works. Some of the dacoits got into the same bus after him while others got in at Borivali. Around 9 to 10 accused were in the BEST bus to execute the robbery,” the report quoted a police officer as saying.
One of the accused snatched the bag while others blocked his way to let the accused escape when the bus reached Gundavali bus stop at western express highway in Andheri (east).
According to Vijay Belge, senior inspector from Andheri police station, the other accused directed Kavinkar in the wrong direction in which the robbers fled to mislead him.
During the course of the investigation, police analysed CCTV footages from various locations and got crucial leads in the case leading to the tracking of five accused to Madhya Pradesh border.
The accused have been identified as Mahendra More (45) Manoj Medhe (33) Amin Shaikh (49), Shashikant Kolvalkar (63) and Vijaykumar Gupta (38).
Police also arrested two more accused- Manish Darji (34), Shaitan Singh Rajput (38) from Rajasthan’s Jalore. The two men had helped the accused melt the gold ornaments.
