Ponniyin Selvan 2 box office collection Day 6: Mani Ratnam’s epic nears Rs 250 crore worldwide

Ponniyin Selvan 2 box office collection: While the first film broke several box office records and registered a worldwide collection of Rs 500 cr, the sequel is trailing behind it.

Filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: II, for the first time since its release last week, delivered a single-digital haul on Wednesday. The film, which had been clocking impressive double-digit figures for five days in a row, is likely to get a push on its second weekend. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Ponniyin Selvan: II earned Rs 8 crore across India (early estimates) on Wednesday. The film now stands at an all-India total of around Rs 122.25 crore. Worldwide, the film is nearing the Rs 250 crore mark.

The Aishwarya Rai-starrer had an occupancy of 26.67% in Tamil regions, which was the highest, followed by 14.63% in Malayalam regions, 12.59% in Telugu and 7.91% in Hindi.

The official Twitter page of Ratnam’s production house, Madras Talkies, tweeted on Tuesday the film had an impressive overseas weekend as well. “Over 3.5 million $ grossed in the first weekend! Thank you for the love! #PS2 makes its mark at number 8 at the US weekend box office!” the tweet had read.

Entertainment industry tracker Ramesh Bala had previously tweeted how after a good weekend total, weekdays were “crucial” for Ponniyin Selvan 2. “All-time Top 3 #Kollywood Grossers @ the TN Box office : 1. #PS1 2. #Vikram 3. #Viswasam #PS2 had a good 4-days opening weekend at the TN Box office.. Weekdays and 2nd weekend are crucial.”

Ponniyin Selvan 2 is the second instalment in Mani Ratnam’s two-part series based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s epic novel of the same name. The first film also broke several box office records and registered a worldwide collection of Rs 500 cr. While the sequel is trailing behind in terms of box office, eyes are on where it’ll eventually end its final run.

The period epic features an ensemble cast that includes Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan and Sobhita Dhulipala, among others. The film has been receiving a positive response from all corners and debuted with massive acclaim.
