Veteran actor Sameer Khakhar, who made a name for himself in the 1980s and 1990s on television, has died at the age of 71. His last appearance was in Farzi.
Actor Sameer Khakhar, best known for his role in the iconic television show Nukkad, has died. He was 71. He was suffering from respiratory and other medical problems, and was admitted to the MM Hospital, Borivali, where he breathed his last. His funeral is taking place today at 10.30 am and will proceed to Babhai Naka Crematorium, Borivali.
Sameer Khakhar ‘s brother Ganesh spoke to indianexpress.com, “He experienced some respiratory issues yesterday morning, we called the doctor home and he asked to get him admitted. So we took him to the hospital and he was admitted to the ICU. He then had multiple organ failure and today at 4.30 am he collapsed.” He is survived by his wife.
In a career spanning nearly four decades, the actor appeared across mediums, and worked with major talents both in front of and behind the camera. After working consistently in the 1990s, he moved to the US and started working as a Java coder. In 2008, when the recession hit, he moved back to India and took up his first love – acting. In a 2021 interview with indianexpress.com, the actor had expressed enthusiasm about working in front of the camera again, but confessed that he’s a bit ‘old-school’ in his approach and can’t ‘sell’ himself.
Reflecting on the success of Nukkad, directed by Kundan Shah and Saeed Akhtar Mirza, the actor had said, “After Nukkad, most people gave me similar roles. Having started my character on stage, and then doing some wonderful parts, I understand acting. And no artiste with a rational mind would accept doing the same thing again and again. Also, Khopdi was a character that was created with a lot of care by Saeed Mirza. It was very different and humane, and the team had nurtured it with so much love. While everyone wanted to use me as Khopdi, I had decided to not destroy the character.”
Khakhar also starred in shows such as Manorajan, Circus, Naya Nukkad, Shrimaan Shrimati, and Adaalat. More recently, he played a supporting role in Sudhir Mishra’s Netflix film Serious Men, the ZEE5 series Sunflower and Prime Video’s Farzi.
