Sharad Kelkar shares the profound advice that he got from Shah Rukh Khan: ‘I work more than I’m paid for’
Sharad Kelkar was asked if he had ever felt discriminated against as he was primarily a television actor in his early days.
Sharad Kelkar has been working as an actor for almost 20 years now, and during the early years of his career, Sharad appeared primarily on television shows. In a recent interview, Sharad recalled a piece to advice that he received from Shah Rukh Khan that left a deep impact on him.
In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Sharad recalled that the incident happened roughly 15 years ago during an overseas show. “It was either Singapore or London, I can’t remember. I was a part of a three-day carnival where you get two slots and you have to interact with the audience. I was supposed to go on stage after Shah Rukh sir. As per the schedule, I was supposed to be done by 11 so I told my wife that we will go out for shopping after that.”
Sharad said that when Shah Rukh went up on stage, he did not stick to the schedule and continued his set for way longer. Sharad kept looking at his watch as he had promised his wife that he’d be with her, and by the time Shah Rukh came down from the stage, it was already 11. “I said ‘sir, you were supposed to be on the stage for half an hour but you were there for an hour and a half’. He said, ‘I work more than I am paid for’,” he recalled.
Sharad shared this story when he was asked if he had ever felt discriminated against for being television actor. He said that Shah Rukh gave him such profound wisdom even though he might not have known who Sharad was. “He dis not need to tell me this. He might not have known who I am, I was a TV person. But he also respected that I’m an actor. And if I am here, I must have done something,” he shared. Sharad concluded his thought by saying that he believed he always “got that space and respect” no matter where he worked in the entertainment space.
Shah Rukh Khan, too, started his acting career in television with Fauji, and eventually made his debut in the movies with Deewana.
