Shahid Kapoor’s kids Misha and Zain watched Jab We Met, actor reveals their reaction: ‘They were a little excited but…’

In a chat with indianexpress.com, Shahid Kapoor talks about his interest in doing action films, his process and why wife Mira Rajput chose Jab We Met as the first Shahid film their kids saw.

After Farzi, Shahid Kapoor is all set to take audiences for a thrilling ride with Bloody Daddy. The actor confessed that he has always wanted to do action films. “I think every boy wants to do it, but they have to wait till they become a man. I think I am ready for action now,” he smiled to share.

Shahid added that action films have been on his ‘agenda’ for a while, as he said, “People have been buying into my films which had aggression, were intense, sort of dramatic and powerful. So it was natural to step into an out-and-out action film. It became easier for me as Ali (Ali Abbas Zafar) was helming it. I really feel action dramas are very much a filmmaker’s job. Bloody Daddy, of course, is a performance-oriented action film. But I have seen and liked Ali’s work and I was excited to work with him. We have really kept the drama very gritty and real. It’s hand-to-hand, and you won’t feel like you are watching something from the outside. It’s very real.”

While fans have been excited to see Shahid’s new avatar, he revealed that his daughter Misha and son Zain recently watched him on the big screen for the first time. They watched the romantic drama Jab We Met. The actor shared, “They went with my mom to watch the film. Mira (wife Mira Rajput) felt that they could watch it since it’s a family film. They were of course a little excited but we didn’t talk much about it. We swiftly let it pass. I don’t need to, neither should I be Shahid Kapoor for them. I am just their father (smiles).”

Shahid Kapoor recently clocked 20 years in the film industry, and sharing his parameters of picking up projects, Shahid said, “Honestly, it’s a very wide thought. Firstly, you have to choose what’s in front of you. You cannot always depend on the genre or the type you want to do. But it definitely should not be something too niche. I personally, don’t want to do something that very few people can watch. I have done that for a certain time but now I really believe that good films require wider audiences, so accessibility is important. There should also be something challenging for me as an actor to participate in. Choosing a genre you haven’t done before can also be challenging that way. To sum up, it should be fresh, help me grow as an artiste and I should also have comfort, and a connection with the director and even the producer. You should be able to collaborate, and that only happens with like-minded people.”

On a final note, we asked Shahid Kapoor about his process to break out of his dark characters, something which most actors often struggle with. He laughed to share that when he hears someone say how they got into a dark space playing characters, it leaves him bewildered. “It has never dawned on me that something like this can happen. I have never seen my father also going through that. Of course, there are some moments when you feel depleted or out of the mood but you get out of it and be with your family, your kid, and everything seems right. You see, there’s more to life than just movies and we shouldn’t let work consume ourselves so much. It is a consuming job but one has to find a space for themselves. And I think I am very aware of that fact. During Haider, I was a little out of the zone for a few days, which my father did notice but it has never been to a degree that I couldn’t find myself.”

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Bloody Daddy also stars Ronit Roy, Sanjay Kapoor, Rajeev Khandelwal, and Diana Penty, among others. It will drop on Jio Cinema on June 9.
