Sunny Deol says Bollywood was against Gadar when it released: ‘Audiences’ love changed them’
During his visit to The Kapil Sharma Show, Sunny Deol spoke about how Bollywood tried to pull Gadar down when it released in 2001.
Sunny Deol is set to reprise the much-loved character of Tara Singh in Gadar 2. The sequel to the 2001 blockbuster also stars Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma. After showcasing a love story amid India’s independence, Gadar 2 brings to life the ordeals of the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. During his recent visit to The Kapil Sharma Show, Sunny admitted being nervous about the film as he recalled how Bollywood had turned its back on Gadar when it released.
In a promo shared by Sony TV, Kapil welcomed Sunny Deol, who arrived in Tara Singh’s get-up. As the comedian quizzed him on his emotions ahead of his film’s release, Sunny said in Punjabi, “There is excitement but also nervousness. When the film had released then, everyone in the industry… (gestured thumbs down). But the way the audiences pulled it up, everyone just changed.” His comment left Archana Puran Singh shocked, while the studio audience showed their support by applauding for him.
Gadar was re-released on June 9 and found many takers as audiences flocked to watch Tara Singh-Sakeena’s love story, and Sunny’s action packed avatar. The actor had met fans at an event then and spoken about how Bollywood was against the film. He shared how many suggested they dub the film as it has Punjabi dialogues and distributers refused the film citing the same.
“Jab Gadar – Ek Prem Katha lagi, tab humein nahin pata tha ki yeh film gadar machayegi. People used to say, ‘Yeh Punjabi film hai. Isse Hindi mein dub karo’. Some distributors said, ‘Main toh nahin kharidunga yeh film’. So we did face a lot of issues. Lekin janta ko film itni pasand aayi ki unhone sab ka munh bandh karwa diya! Unhone hi humein himmat di hai ki hum part 2 banayein,” he said.
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 will release in cinema halls on August 11.
