Tamil Nadu rains: Holiday declared for Chennai schools, several other districts
In wake of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu starting Wednesday night, schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur have been shut . Schools have been closed in 12 other districts including Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur.
According to the Chennai Corporation’s rainfall data, several areas across the city recorded significant precipitation in the 24 hours leading up to 6 a.m. on Thursday. North and Central Chennai were particularly affected, with some zones reporting over 7 cm of rainfall. The average rainfall for the city during this period was 5.3 cm, with Kolathur recording the highest at 8.5 cm, followed by Nerkundram at 7.9 cm. Rain gauges in areas like Tondiarpet, Perambur, Madhavaram, Basin Bridge, Ayapakkam, and Aminjikarai also recorded more than 7 cm of rainfall.
The rains, attributed to a well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, are expected to ease after Thursday. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall, with intense spells, across Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram until 10 a.m. on Thursday.
School Closure in Puducherry
Home Minister A. Namassivayam declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal on Thursday due to heavy rain forecasts according to media reports. Intermittent rainfall was recorded in Puducherry on Wednesday, attributed to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The district administration stated that they are closely monitoring weather updates from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai and will implement necessary measures based on the forecast.
