UP Polls 2022 Updates: Voting in phase 1 underway; PM Modi urges people to turn up in record numbers
Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7 and the results will be announced on March 10.
The battle for Uttar Pradesh began on Thursday with polling at 58 assembly seats spread across 11 districts in the western part of the state. Polling started at 7 AM and will continue till 6 PM. The first phase covers the Jat-dominated belt of western UP from where farmers had participated actively in the stir against the Centre’s three farm laws in the national capital. The 11 districts where polling is underway in the first phase are Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Mathura and Agra. In all, as many as 2,27,83,739 (over 2.27 crore) voters — including 1,23,31,251 (over 1.23 crore) male voters, 1,04,51,053 (over 1.04 crore) female voters and 1,435 third gender voters will exercise their franchise at 25,849 polling booths located in 10,766 polling centres. As many as 623 candidates, including 73 women, are in the fray. Ministers whose fate would be decided in the first phase include Shrikant Sharma, Suresh Rana, Sandeep Singh, Kapil Dev Agarwal, Atul Garg and Chowdhury Lakshmi Narain. In 2017, the BJP bagged 53 of the 58 seats, while the SP and the BSP got two seats each. One seat had gone to the RLD.
